Building permits in the United States increased 6.0 percent month over month in August 2021

Washington, D.C. – Building permits in the United States increased 6.0 percent month over month in August 2021 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.728 million, the highest level since April and significantly higher than market projections of 1.60 million.

The volatile multi-segment increased 15.8 percent to 674 thousand authorizations, while single-family authorizations increased 0.6 percent to 1.054 million.

Permits increased in all regions: the South (6.7 percent to 914 thousand); the West (3.5% to 445 thousand); the Midwest (0.9 percent to 215 thousand); and the Northeast (0.9 percent to 215 thousand) (18.5 percent to 154 thousand)
