CAT’s Awesome New D11 XE Rocks MINEXPO 2021 In Las Vegas

Las Vegas, NevadaCAT® had a showstopper at MINEEXPO 2021 this year in Las Vegas. CAT ® brought its show piece, the new all electric drive, D11 XE. Its largest dozer on the market and first prototype ever utilizing electric drive.

Caterpillar® ‘s new prototype electric drive dozer is the most productive and fuel-efficient dozer the company has ever built. The D11 XE electric drive powertrain, designed specifically for dozers by Caterpillar and engineered to deliver low cost per ton in dozing applications, combines optimized power to the ground with durability and ease of service to deliver low cost per ton in dozing applications.

The D11 XE promises low emissions per ton dozing and up to 25% less fuel costs per BCM. The new design aims for 20% longer engine rebuild cycles than mechanical drive models, and 60% less moving parts means more machine uptime.

For maximum performance, the D11 XE incorporates Cat powertrain, electronics, software, and controls. Component damage is reduced by machine protection. MineStarTM Command for dozing, which offers remote control and semiautonomous dozing, is enabled by the dozer’s updated electronics architecture.

The new dozer’s modular design improves serviceability of the powertrain. Less moving parts mean less maintenance and lower service costs. This electric drive dozer shares components with mechanical drive models, making maintenance easier and reducing parts inventory.

The simple machine design reduces major component rebuilding and/or replacement due to longer powertrain life.
Longer rebuild cycles, less fuel consumption, and less maintenance add up to the lowest cost per bank cubic meter (BCM) ever.

The D11 XE is currently being tested at Caterpillar’s dozer proving grounds in Peoria, Illinois, before going into full production.

CAT® 777G Water Solutions Truck

It would not have been MINEXPO without a shining CAT® centerpiece. The D11XE is not the only machine CAT® brought. The construction manufacturer brought a fleet of new autonomous rigs and the 777G Water Truck. Built on the proven Cat® 777G truck platform, the new 777G Water Solutions truck helps control haul road dust in mining and quarry operations.

The 777G from CAT® Water Solutions helps solve overwatering and underwatering issues while focusing on sustainable operations. The Cat® Water Delivery System (WDS) with Cat® MineStarTM Edge connectivity helps operations manage the site more safely and productively.

The new CAT® 777G Water Solutions truck includes a 20,000-gallon water tank with spray system, splash guards, fill chute, and rock ejectors. The truck’s engine uses up to 13% less fuel than full power when in Adaptive Economy Mode.
The water cannon runs at idle speed, saving up to 50% on fuel.

CAT WDS

The Cat WDS delivers variable waterflow based on truck speed, reducing the risk of accidents due to poor visibility while saving water. So that there is no overwatering and no poor traction at road intersections, the variable displacement pump automatically starts and stops. It also has soft start-ups and shuts down automatically when the tank is empty, preventing system damage. Wet Discharge System (WDS) components include a water cannon and a hydraulic motor/water pump.

Automated water delivery reduces airborne particle health risks while allowing the operator to focus on driving.
Remote tank fill control with auto shut-off prevents overfilling and keeps the operator inside the cab, reducing slips and falls.

CAT MineStar Edge Scalability

For site supervisors to monitor fleet and meet production targets, MineStar Edge cloud-based software is integrated with Cat WDS. The system can provide real-time and historical reporting, truck location and utilization, fuel and water levels, volume of water distributed, area covered, and rate of water application, among other operational metrics.

CAT ON CLIMATE AGENDA

Caterpillar has also been on the move with its climate initiatives, acquiring Enhanced Energy Group Inc., dba “CarbonPoint Solutions”. CarbonPoint Solutions, based in Rhode Island, provides CO2 capture and utilization technology.

Carbon capture systems from CarbonPoint Solutions can be installed on oil and gas engines, distributed power plants, industrial plants, and waste-to-energy plants.

“Combining CarbonPoint Solutions’ patented technology with Caterpillar Oil & Gas solutions enables us to further reduce greenhouse gas emissions while helping our customers meet their climate-related objectives,”, said Rod Shurman, vice president of Caterpillar’s Oil & Gas and Marine Division.

The Semi-Closed Cycle and carbon capture for Cat engines and Solar gas turbines are already in development at CarbonPoint Solutions. Caterpillar has stated its commitment to a low-carbon future. They are showing this by investing in new products, technologies, and services that help it’s customers build a more sustainable world.

MORE ABOUT MINEXPO 2021

MINExpo 2021 was September 13-15, 2021 in Las Vegas, Navada. National Mining Association sponsors MINExpo INTERNATIONAL®. The National Mining Association (NMA) represents US mining in Washington, D.C. The NMA is the only national trade association that represents mining interests before Congress, the executive branch, federal agencies, the judiciary, and the media. The NMA works to promote public policies that help America fully utilize its mineral and coal resources. The NMA has over 250 corporate and non-profit members based it informs, hears, and represents in these diverse industry segments ranging from aggregates, sand and other mining. A schedule of the events held can be found here.
