Construction Adds 30,500 Jobs. Job Growth Misses
In August 2021, private businesses in the United States hired 374 thousand people, compared to a downwardly revised 326 thousand increase in July and considerably below market estimates of a 613 thousand gain.
The service industry added 329 thousand jobs, headed by leisure and hospitality (201 thousand jobs), education and health care (59 thousand jobs), professional and business services (19 thousand jobs), and trade, transportation, and utilities (18 thousand).
The goods-producing industry generated 45,500 jobs, supported by increases in construction (30,500), natural resources and mining (9,500), and manufacturing (9,500). (6 thousand).
“We have seen a decline in new hires, following significant job growth from the first half of the year. Despite the slowdown, job gains are approaching 4 million this year, yet still 7 million jobs short of pre-COVID-19 levels.
