Construction Specifications, Shop Drawings, Submittals. Do we Need Them? How Much Longer Will We Use Them?

United States Of America- Construction Specifications, Shop Drawings, Submittals & Substitutes. One of the most time consuming and problematic processes that face modern construction projects and sites. The AEC industry is broken and so is our supply chains. Enormous and alarming amounts of time, energy, waste, man power and money through change orders along with poor planning of projects are keeping the industry stuck, lapped in technology and less involved and intelligent.

An Industry operating on out dated technology, processes and never ending promises of its getting better. Is it getting better? Are we doing it all wrong and stuck in a protocol and specification system based off the improvements of a platform and specification system designed for turning hand drafting drawings to CAD from the 80’s? Specifications and protocols being observed in the industry are obsolete and in most cases pointless, bad for the environment and discouraging with data of users and assets being the only focus from the biggest players in our industry. Is the data and these platforms hurting us? Yes. Both on a competitive level and it’s a now a global problem for us.

Do We Need Construction Specifications

Do we need specifications, submittals and approvals at the site level? The answer is looking more towards No. With emerging technology and supply chains we are capable of handling these processes at the literal collaborative design stage. Architects, Engineers & Program Managers need to move faster and construction needs more industrialization and streamlining. Change orders, corruption and existing social system protocols and monetization need to be eliminated and reduced in area.

Systems like Bylt: OS & NAICP are striving towards a new social collaborative approach to real estate development, bonding, capital improvements, procurement & payments, supply chain, and construction to a finished digital twin and physical asset models.

Standard current protocols and “BIM” object data lack a consistency and relevant data catalog throughout the industry and plagued by larger corporations trying to control the standards, platforms and data. This has now also become more of a problem this year as movements escalate and industry leaders swarm to relevancy.

NAICP’s & Bylt’s open approach, built on blockchain & NFT objects along with other stacks, network and asset distributed technology, put these processes at the concept or design & procurement stage. The system starts with the manufacturer/distributor supply chain taking the manufactures global data, inventory, locations etc as the start of the digital twin object as its pulled into specification. These base object models (digital twins), products, robots, materials, people, etc) are all searchable if wanted on demand and base file shared between models and projects. Aggregation throughout the procurement and specification processes are layered and aggregated to the base model and added to the object data in the overall building model or digital twin.

Do we need Submittals After Procurement Or During Construction?

We should not. A simple arrival geo tagging or RFID tracking along with the object data should be all they need after a delivery acceptance, installation scanning. ESG data tracked along the way. As the project escalates through design and loading calculations, wind loads, energy, color options etc the object is a digital twin purchase order model with coinciding engineering calculations, specifications and manufacture/architectural/engineer/owner/agency approvals. Job specific installation if any, layered. Robotic programmatic data if needed.

Projects like hospitals or specialty buildings and interior designs have unique products and fabrications. There is no model objects or “BIM” standard base objects available. How do I put this custom metal spiral staircase into the model? Or how do I buy it without a submittal and shop drawing? It’s a piece of art.

As the design collaboration unfolds these custom products or specific engineered structural components will be purchased and or designed “on demand” through the fabricators proposals, engineer, artist, designer or manufacturer and in turn a NFT object. You do not simply get a spec sheet or cut sheet… You will get a digital twin to use or not use and purchase.

Conclusion

The industry has been so engulfed and programmed to digitize obsolete processes and platforms at such a fast pace of investment that it needs to take a long hard look at the past few years and why it’s getting worse. Stubbornness? Maybe. But in reality this is a major problem and seems to be snowballing. The clique’s in our industry may just be holding us back as more and more technology company’s move in to U.S. markets and fields. U.S. companies loose dominance and led down a unfruitful future or path to slaughter.
