Freight Slow Moving – Low Water Problems On The Mississippi River & Apparatus Rivers

United States of America – In the United States, the Mississippi River serves as a key freight transportation route. More than half of the 165.5 million tons that were transported in 2020 between the 12 states bordering the Upper Mississippi System and Louisiana were transported by the river. The percentage of freight transported by the river to Louisiana for several of those states is significant: 92% for Indiana, 81 % for Missouri, 80 % for Illinois, and 75 % for Kentucky.

Today, the Lower River’s low water levels have significantly impeded that movement of freight.
