The seasonally adjusted annual rate of privately owned dwelling units authorized by building permits was 1,685,000. This is 0.6 percent lower than the revised May rate of 1,695,000, but 1.4% higher than the June 2021 rate of 1,661,000.
The rate of single-family construction authorizations in June were 967,000, which is 8.0 percent lower than the revised May figure of 1,051,000. In June, there were 666,000 authorizations for units in buildings with five or more units.
Housing Starts
In June, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of privately owned home starts was 1,559,000. This is 2.0% (9.0%)* lower than the revised May estimate of 1,591,000 and 6.3% (10.2%)* lower than the June 2021 rate of 1,664,000. Single-family home starts were 982,000 in June, down 8.1 percent (12.2%)* from the revised May number of 1,068,000. The June rate for units in buildings of five or more units was 568,000.
Housing Completions
Privately owned home completions reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1,365,00 in June. This is 4.6 percent (11.7%)* less than the revised May estimate of 1,431,000, but it is 4.6 percent (13.4%)* higher than the June 2021 rate of 1,305,000. Single-family dwelling completions were 996,000 in June, 4.1 percent (11.1%)* lower than the revised May rate of 1,039,000. The June rate for units in buildings of five or more units was 366,000.
